Fine Coffee Along with Farm and Mill Tours at the Big Island’s Hilo Coffee Mill
The Hilo Coffee Mill in the town of Mountain View is a nice place to stop if you are going from Hilo to see Volcanoes National Park. You can grab a bite to eat, sample some fine Hilo Coffee, and even take a coffee farm and mill tour.
Set on 24 acres the site provides a viewing area and tasting bar. The Hilo Coffee Mill was founded in 2001 with the goal of helping local coffee farmers in the production and processing of their coffee as well as marketing the coffee.
Hawaiian coffees are for sale at the Hilo Coffee Mill offers a variety of green coffee beans and coffees roasted in small batches. Also for sale is decaffeinated coffee that uses the Swiss Water Process of Decaffeination.
Visitors can enjoy lunch, see the cage-free chickens (about 130 of them!), and take a private tour of the Mill given by one of the mill’s founders knowledgeable in coffee growing, processing, brewing and coffee tasting.
Hilo Coffee Mill is located between Mile Markers 12 and 13 on the Volcano Highway. If you are heading toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo then the Hilo Coffee Mill is on the left at 17-995 Volcano Highway.
The Hilo Coffee Mill store is open from Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 4 pm.
Tour the Hilo Coffee Mill Including the Coffee Fields and Roasting Area
The Hilo Coffee Mill tour includes includes areas of the old sugar plantation including the irrigation channels, and takes visitors into the coffee plantation where more than five acres of coffee are growing. Information is provided about cultivating, fertilizing and harvesting coffee, all by hand. Next the tour visits the coffee pulping area where you can see how it is done.
The tour continues on through the tea fields and you will learn about how tea is grown and processed. Next is the coffee drying area, then the roasting room with its two Diedrich Coffee Roasters, each of which handles thirty pounds at a time.
Finally the tour ends up with some proper coffee brewing and tasting and you can sample some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted coffees. Guests can finish up with a hearty lunch including fresh local produce.
